24 Nov A Song That Just Is
A quick Google search informed me that it was the legendary football coach Lou Holtz who said: “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
It sings because that’s just what it does.
“The music soars within the little lark,
And the lark soars.” ~Elizabeth Barrett Browning
And because it sings, the trees sound full. It’s one of the many voices of nature.
The elaborate and melodious song of the lark floats among the branches in much of music, mythology and literature as a symbol of daybreak or spiritual awakening.
I first saw the lark in my work years ago. A pierced circle that was to be the front of a locket went awry during a doming process. A simple swirling cut out design was stretched in the doming block, and when it came out, the little bird was there. (Now I dome first and then pierce the design.)
I have kept the lark in my work in years since. I made hollowform pendants like this one last fall, and sold them all very quickly. I decided to bring them back, and I’m happy to say the Lark Song necklace is one of the first things offered in my fancy new online shop!
This hollowform sterling silver pendant is fabricated from heavily textured sterling silver sheet featuring a hand-pierced embellished lark design. The patina on the interior of the form shines through the pierced bird form.
