23 Nov Asheville Color – peek inside my camera roll
My recent trip to Asheville, NC, was filled with color. Funky bricks. Illuminated tea. Neon wigs. You will find all kinds of rich color in AVL.
What a cool town.
Take a look at these shots from my camera roll. Hover over titled images for more of the story – enjoy!
Original Drawing by Olivia Allen |
My daughter is quite good with a fine point archival pen. I snapped this from her sketchbook that she keeps on the kitchen table. Yes, this is her breakfast doodle. |
Hands Down Best Burger in AVL |
I don’t have to think twice when the mood for a burger hits me while I’m in Asheville. GF bun, fresh grass feed beef, Looking Glass Goat Cheese, fried egg over medium, sautéed mushrooms… and sweet potato fries. This is what’s for lunch, rain or shine. |
Jewelry Design in Process |
This snapshot of a loose sketch in the GMA Elevation Series with a few pencil points will be part of the marketing materials for the GMA Signature Collection, launching January 2016. |
Bulgogi Stone Bowl, Again |
I’m sure Korean House offers other yummy dishes, but I keep returning for the bulgogi stone bowl. The bowl is hot, hot enough to cook the egg that arrives on the top of the dish. Flip it, stir, and sizzle your way to deliciousness. But, be careful. The chopsticks are metal, and they will get too hot to handle if you leave them resting in the bowl too long. You don’t want to scorch your kisser. |
Chocolate Library |
French Broad Chocolate Lounge has expanded and moved to Pack Square. I normally go for the Caramel Collection, or the Buddha Collection, but for a quick stop you can select from this amazing library of bars in the adjoining Chocolate + Milk venue. My friend Brandi says the goat milk chocolate bar is a winner, so I’ll be trying that one on my next trip. |
Juice for Breakfast |
Elements is just around the corner from Hotel Olivia, and the Blueberry Diesel bottled smoothie did the trick for me. I enjoyed a morning meetup with my friend Susan here. We didn’t solve all the problems of the world, but we put a dent in them thanks to our blueberry diesels. |
Phalaenopsis Blume |
Tucked over in the corner at Green Life, my friends and I were surrounded by a wall of these lovely orchids. Common though they’ve become, they continue to fascinate me. They seem to be reaching out for a hug. |
Strolling Blocks |
Hotel Olivia is surrounded by a neighborhood filled with mature craftsman structures. After mostly looking up, my fascination with the architectural details began to wane (which maybe it never did, but anyway…). I began to look down and notice more lovely details, including this sidewalk. Each brick was made by someone years ago. Each brick was laid in this path years ago. And now here I am noticing it, photographing it, and sharing it with you. I find that all amazing. |
Oh, Olive |
This little canine is part of the family. She is the member in charge of jumping, trash sorting, and licking. Everything. |
Personal Thinking Headquarters |
In the tea room at Dobra Tea, I have spent hours working, thinking, chatting and pondering. I do love a good cup of tea, and at Dobra I have never been disappointed. This day was a day for jin zhen golden buds, and it was delicious. |
Tailgate Color |
On the day we went to the Tailgate Market on the UNC-Asheville campus, it was raining. Yet, the color was still vibrant. These root veggies are a great source of color and texture. |
Asheville Color |
The day I shot this photo was the day I started using #AVLcolor on all my posts from this trip. Asheville is nothing if not colorful. |
Mountaineer Inn, In All Its Glory |
The Mountaineer is legendary in my husband’s family, as this is the place they stayed while visiting family in Asheville when he was a kid. Early in our marriage, I stayed here a few times myself. What an adventure. |
