Jewelry is personal. Often it is used to commemorate a commitment to something. Not so much in effort to display one’s choices to others, but more often as a way to simply honor a decision. Jewelry can be worn as a symbol for a commitment to a relationship, to faith, to a life choice.
Wedding rings are a prime example.
I have been honored to attend several wedding ceremonies for which I made the rings. Whatever the venue or the style of the service, there is usually a point in the ceremony during which the rings are discussed. And in that moment when the rings are presented, I think about their form. I know every intricacy of every contour and connection. At that point I know the rings better than the couple themselves know them.
But I can never know the fullness of the meaning they represent. That is the privilege of the couple entering into the covenant relationship on that day.
I ponder such things for them. In the midst of my creative process, there are times when the technical processes demand my full attention. There are other times when I get to just sit and sand, or gently forge, or whatever. In those moments my thoughts often drift to the individuals who will wear the rings. I ponder their future. I utter a prayer for them. And then I just keep on sanding.
